A positional sacrifice
A positional sacrifice is defined as a sacrifice of material that will give positional advantages in return, which can include initiative, better piece harmony, better pawn structure, creation of weaknesses in the opponent's camp, and so on. A positional sacrifice thus does not lead to an attack that will later lead to either mate or re-gained material. Instead, a positional sacrifice converts material into positional advantages.
